“Hi, honey. Did you have a good day?”

“It was fine,” Nathan said. He looked at the dark, shiny loaves on the table. “Banana bread?”

“Banana bread with chocolate chips,” Mama agreed. She sighed, looking over the loaves, and over the chaos that ruled the rest of the kitchen. “What a mess.”

Nathan thought about offering to help to clean up, but his heart was pumping hard and he was already out of breath. He pulled out one of the kitchen chairs and sat down. Mama started to pick up the flour and other various ingredients to put them away. Moving the ingredients out of the way revealed an open box with a picture of a mouse on it. Nathan frowned at it.

“Do we have mice?” he questioned.

“You cannot let unclean things pollute your house,” Mama said solemnly. “Let no unclean thing come near you.”

Nathan swallowed. “Yeah,” he agreed. “So you’re going to kill them? The mice?”

She raised an eyebrow at him, and put the box of poison under the sink. “Do you need to lie down for a while?” she questioned. “Or are you doing all right?”
