Born William Albert Ackman on May 11, 1966, he grew up in a wealthy Jewish family in New York. His father was chair of a prominent real estate financing firm, the Ackman-Ziff Real Estate Group.
In 1988, he earned a magna cum laude bachelor of arts degree in history from Harvard University. He got his MBA in 1992.
Partnering with his classmate David Berkowitz he launched his first hedge fund, Gotham Partners. He grew up on his family extensive network to provide the financing for the company. Early investors included Seth Klarman, Michael Steinhardt, and Whitney Tilson.
Gotham had $500 million in assets by 1998 but was closed down in 2002 after a problematic and litigious investment in a golf course that ultimately ended with investors asking for the return of their capital.
In 2004, he started hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management with $54 million assets under management. Typically, the fund invests in only a handful of substantial positions.
Some of Ackman investments brought him a great deal of notoriety. His short position on bond insurer MBIA took several years to play out but brought in billions for Pershing in 2008. The saga chronicled in the book "Confidence Game" by Christine Richard.
