“I understand that you and I have an acquaintance in common,” Gabe began. Just because she was his introduction to the owners of Creighton Manor, and any other neighbors he might need to meet, did not mean he would not first confirm that he was speaking to the correct operative. Except, she wasn’t an operative. She had simply been convenient and had the connections he needed in the area.
“Lord Hopkins, yes. He visited his daughter a few days ago and we spoke.” Her voice was light and delicate, with an underlying confidence and a hint of French in her accent. “He told me to expect you.”
Gabe nodded and took a sip of his tea.
“Now that you have arrived, I will advise Mr. and Mrs. Kazakov so that an introduction can be arranged. I will also advise Lord and Lady Severen.”
He also now knew that Miss Morris was the daughter of the smuggler who had been making the necessary arrangements to bring French spies into England. “I understand that your association with Lord and Lady Severen is not known.”
“That is correct.”
“Given Lady Severen and I escaped the Terror together, with the assistance of Lord Severen, it has not been unusual for me to visit in their home, which is not far from here.”
“Once you have made the introductions, your part will be complete?” Gabe hated to leave any part of a mission to chance. Miss Morris, however, had the potential to be more involved than he anticipated. Lord Hopkins certainly trusted her, and she kept her family secrets, but he needed to make certain that she understood that her part was limited to introductions. Any further involvement would be too dangerous for her, and anyone else. She was a schoolteacher, not an agent.
