Sample text:

Hector drove through the night, finally making it to Senor Mateo’s compound at six a.m.  He pulled up to the gate of Mateo’s compound, and used the intercom.  They let him in.  Senor Mateo met him about twenty minutes later on the back patio.

“I lost my Arianna!”  Mateo came and sat at the table beside Hector, a pot of coffee with two cups already waiting.

Hector sipped from his coffee cup.  “I am sorry.”  Oh shit, wait until I tell him about Miko’s men!  These are not good times to be Mateo!  “How did that happen?”

“You see, she had grown tired of her role here.  She deserves marriage to a good man, not me.”  Mateo stirred his cup, and gently placed the spoon on the table.  “I offered her money and a vehicle….”

“And she refused your offer, and left on her own terms, I assume?” Hector replied, taking another thoughtful sip from his cup.

“Yes,” Mateo replied, regretting the tone of his voice.  “And what is worse, when Joaquin doubled back to check on her, she was not at the bus stop.  He waited, but she never did get on her bus.”

Oh boy, NOW I am supposed to report on Miko’s men being everywhere they aren’t supposed to be?  Oh well, here goes nothing!  “Senor Mateo, we have another problem.”  Hector waited for a response, but there was none.  “Miko’s men are going too far.”  Hector reported the incident with the station wagon, the boys, Maria, and the jeep.

“Miko has wanted war with me for some time.  He believes he can win, and thus take control of all of my territory.”  Mateo stared out at the desert, a slight breeze parting his thinning hair.
