There were no pleasantries uttered, no greeting. She said simply, “I want out.”
There was silence on the line for several seconds. Then the voice, tentative now, said, “You know I can’t help with that, Hui. I have no idea who to talk to. You know why the boss is called The Shadow. Nobody knows who he is.”
“You got me in.” The voice was flat, but accusation was there.
“I know. I know. But what did I know then? I was just a pawn ... like you.”
“You must know someone.”
Again, a lengthy silence. “Are you sure? Do you really want to give up that fabulous apartment, the lovely clothes, the money, the high life? You’ll never make anything like that on your own.”
Again, she said, stubborn, resolute, “I want out.”
“You need to think about this, Hui. Nobody walks out on The Shadow.” Her contact sounded troubled.
“I can’t live like this any longer. I’m going to pack and leave now. I will give my key to the concierge. Let somebody know.”
“Wait! Wait! They know you. Where can you go?”
Her lips tightened. “I’m leaving tonight.”
“Hui, please, you aren’t thinking straight. You must have heard the whispers.”
“Whispers?”
“Cross The Shadow; become a shade.” Silly words, but the speaker was clearly disturbed by them.
“Shade?”
“Literary version of ‘ghost’. You want that?”
“Melodramatic nonsense.”
“Is it? Remember the young Chinese girl a year ago? Some say that was a message from The Shadow.”
Hui hesitated as fear again assailed her. “Rumour and speculation. There’s no truth in that.”
