Candy knows that her husband wants a baby, but she can’t give him one. When Neil pays for a surrogate and moves her into their home, he tells her not to worry, but she suddenly feels as if she’s on the outside looking in.
Then, one day, she meets a little girl who steals her heart, a little girl with a damaged, scarred soul filled with the kind of despair and hopelessness that should never be in the innocent eyes of a child. But neither Neil nor his family understand her need to help.
As their marriage hangs on brink of disaster Candy is forced to make a choice between her husband and helping this child.

An ache squeezed her chest, making it impossible to breathe, but she stood stoically, wondering if her face would crack from how tightly she was holding her expression.
“All done. We just have to wait now and see if it worked,” Neil said. He was beaming at the girl, and Candy couldn’t take it any longer.
“Excuse me,” she muttered, darting out the door and running down the stairs. She heard footsteps behind her.
“Candy!” Neil shouted, but she didn’t stop. As she pushed the door open and ran out into the bright sun, he grabbed her arm. “What’s wrong with you?” he asked, though it sounded like an accusation.
This time, she pulled her arm away. “Why did you really want me there, Neil?” Her voice cracked. “To humiliate me?”
She took in his dark expression. He was staring at her as if she’d lost her mind. She knew she wasn’t going to be able to explain it to him. Behind them, the door to the clinic opened, and Carmen and Maria stepped through it, hesitating as they stared at Candy and then called out to her husband.
“Thank you, Neil,” Maria said. Carmen was smiling brightly.
He turned and stepped away from Candy. “No, thank you, Maria and Carmen. Listen, I’ll be in touch. I’ll call you tomorrow and see how you’re doing …”
This was way too much for her to be expected to handle. Candy was operating in survival mode as she turned away and started walking. Whatever else Neil said to them, she didn’t hear it. She was done.
