The Ministry Communications Unit by Gordon Smith

Romance develops with a background in Australia during World War 2

The ministry communications unit

Prior to the Second World War, Japan and Australia had been successful trading partners, but after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbour, Australia was soon at war with Japan. Various attacks by Japan soon followed and the citizens of Australia became afraid and were ready to bolt inland from the coastal regions. In 1942, General McArthur set up his headquarters for the Pacific in Brisbane and, as a result, the city needed a civilian population to ensure the smooth operation of its essential services. Due to its proximity to the Pacific battlefronts, it was a crucial geographic point for resupplying troops in battle – from both sides of the war. A plan was soon hatched to make newsreel films and articles that would not only reassure Australia’s civilians that they would be safe from Japanese threat, but, at the same time, they would also be leaked to the Japanese in an effort to convince them that Brisbane was too difficult a city to invade. The Ministry Communications Unit chronicles the creation and development of the special public relations unit that created those movies and articles.

It is also about adventure, romance, glory and also personal sacrifice. The Ministry Communications unit, tells the tale of how the unit developed along with the interactions of people causing interest and romances to begin. But nothing in the path of love can run smoothly and as the young men and women become romantically involved they then become shocked by the horrific hospital boat sinking

“The reason I am here today is to welcome him and personally thank him for all he has done. I will also find out who he is and how he got to be there. He was picked up three days ago by submarine and should be here within the next two hours.”“One of our men will now show you around our base, and when you return next time, you will have full run of the unit to film and record. Your transport back to Cairns will leave at three this afternoon. Lunch will be served on the lawn outside for about two hours, in the meantime, feel free to ask your guide to anything you like. Remembering you’re all bound by the Official Secrets Act.”

They were on a small rise when they saw a patrol boat coming into the wharf. The guide told them that a coast watcher was due today, and he was probably on that patrol boat. He would have come in on the American sub that passed your boat after you left Cairns.

They headed back for lunch when they passed the officials who were going to the wharf, to meet the coast watcher. Tom commented that they would probably need days to debrief him, and to fill in the gaps about his identity.

Shortly after they were out of sight, they heard the Intelligence man say. “Welcome to Coast Watchers base er..... Visitor," Jill went pale as she heard the response.

“Colonel Robert Robertson, formerly Australian liaison officer with the British Air Ministry,"

Jill let out a shriek. “Bob!” and she ran toward the voices.

Commotion followed. Bob ran toward Jill. The greeting party was shocked as they embraced. Tom and the group chased after Jill.

Tears flowed down Jill’s face, and Bob turned and said. “Excuse me, sir. This is my wife!”
