It was a warm summer day off the Florida Keys.   In the Atlantic Ocean near Key Largo, at a depth of 40 feet, a burst of cosmic ray particles from deep space passed through a patch of zooxanthellae, a form of algae that lives in a symbiotic relationship with coral.                 Zooxanthellae provide the coral with nutrients.     The zooxanthellae were layered on a coral head.                 The direct hit on a single organism tore through the DNA in the cell’s nucleus, mitochondrion and chloroplasts causing it to rip apart.  The DNA reassembled itself into a genome totally different from the original form.
