When two valuable oil paintings are missing, Kendall is asked to investigate on behalf of the Insurance Company. Reluctantly he accepts the job. Then a body is discovered, and then another. “So what do you think?” asked Mollie.
“What do I think?” Kendall repeated. “Well with two people dead, I think someone has been practicing the art of murder.”

“What are you doing here, at this time of night?” Lafayette asked. “I thought everyone had gone.”
“I wanted to speak to you,” Bishop replied.
“And it couldn’t wait until the morning?” said Lafayette.
Bishop shook his head. “No, it really couldn’t wait,” he replied. “I want to keep what I have to say strictly between you and me, understand. I don’t want anyone else to know anything about it.”
Lafayette looked puzzled, and a little intrigued. “Just what is it you want to talk to me about?” he asked.
“I just wondered if now might be a good time to discuss a raise,” Bishop replied. “I think I deserve one, don’t you.”
“A raise, have you taken leave of your senses,” said Lafayette angrily. He looked back at the wall clock. “You pick ten after seven to talk about a raise.”
“Seemed like as good a time as any,” Bishop replied.
“Good time or not,” said Lafayette. “Just why would I agree to pay you more money?”
The visitor smiled, and slowly looked around the room. “Business is doing pretty good by the look of things,” he said. “Since the, er … robbery sales have picked up, and profits are definitely up.” He paused for a moment. “The auction result was incredible, wouldn’t you say. How much do you get Gerard? Your commission on almost seven million dollars. Then, of course, there’s the small matter of the six million plus dollars you’ll get from the insurance company, as a payout for the loss of those two forgeries. Not bad for a few weeks’ work I’d say. But, let’s leave that to one side shall we, for the moment at least.”
