“Life isn't beautiful. Sometimes, it's as ugly as our worst nightmares. This is one of those times.”
Pepper has hit rock bottom. With barely enough money to pay for food, desperate times call for desperate measures. She's convinced that she has been through enough to weather any emotional storm. But she never could have prepared herself for meeting Dmitri Strife.
This is book five of a dark romance series.
Pepper sleeps like an angel, her blonde curls framing her face. I resist the urge to touch her though I don't know why. We shared a very intimate night together. Touching her should come naturally to me now. Besides, I do need to wake her up soon.
I sit on the side of the bed and sigh as I think of the long day ahead. Last night was perfect. In Pepper's arms, I forgot about work and needing to move and my time with Marie Overton. Now reality is coming back with all the weight it carries. I probably fucked up by sleeping with Pepper, but I just couldn't restrain myself. My body was riled up, my heart yearning for a deeper connection with her. All I did was complicate things, though.
I go to the bathroom to wash my face before picking up my phone and lazily poking at the button to bring up the locked screen where my notifications are displayed. No new text messages. That's a miracle. Maybe Pepper is a good luck charm.
