In order for you to better understand the process of reading and the ability of speed reading, you should learn and understand what happens in our brains when reading. To start off, your eye perceives a visual image. Then the visual imaging component of the brain processes information. The information is then connected with the auditory sound the words being read make. This process leads to inner speech or silent reading to take place.
This inner speech is combined with the emotions arising from the text generating information that is appropriate for storage. There are three 'information analyzers” that are used when processing information contained within a body of text - the visual, auditory and the Broca’s area of the brain, which is linked to speech production.
Unfortunately, the system by which we learn to read is imperfect – the major center for the storage and processing of information is in auditory analyzer. Remember how a child learns to read – first the child reads slowly aloud, following the words with his or her finger, then the child learns to read words one by one until they have learned to read almost fluently without sounding out or pronouncing each word.
