It is good to understand how the concept of speed-reading came about. The beginnings of speed reading was created through the use of the tachistoscope, a device used by the US Air Force to train their pilots’ focus and memory. The gadget will show the pilot an image for a short period of time then remove it from view. The pilot would have to identify which are enemy planes while they simulate battles in the cockpit.
This tachistoscope methodology was later applied to reading: it flashed a group of words on a screen for .002 seconds and readers were tested if they remembered and understood the phrase completely. In the beginning, it was believed that people read by looking at all the letters in a word then associating them with meaning. The concept of “reading by letters” was changed when it was proved, through studies and experiments, that people have the ability to read not just one word, but a group of three, five, or even more words at a given time. Thus, speed reading was popularized.
Evelyn Wood was the one who coined the phrase. She studied the habits exhibited by fast readers and developed techniques on how to enhance one’s reading speed.
