Learning how to speed read isn’t merely about clearing away bad habits and replacing them with a new, superior approach. If you are serious about succeeding, you need to ensure that you take yourself seriously. If you harbor negative beliefs about yourself, your intellect, your ability to change and of the usefulness of speed reading in general, you will only see limited success. The exercise below will set you up to succeed by overcoming self-limiting perceptions and patterns of negative thinking.
Exercise: Take a look at your negative judgments.
Take a piece of paper and a pen. Note down any beliefs you have about yourself, reading, and learning in general. Now put the pen down and take a critical look at what you have written. Is there any evidence for these suppositions? Are they objectively true?
Too often, we internalize negative beliefs (e.g. ‘I’m stupid,’ ‘I can’t learn new things,’ etc.) as a result of childhood experiences such as bullying at the hands of our peers or frequent negative remarks from our parents. Remind yourself that, as an adult, you can choose to embark on a mission to learn a new skill – speed reading – that will greatly enhance your prospects in every area of life. You can also choose to think differently. To finish this exercise, pick up your pen again and draw a big fat line through every single negative thought!
