As a young pilot, I was sent for my high-altitude training at Andrews Air Force base. They have a high-altitude chamber and they teach you how to identify signs of high-altitude sickness and hypoxia.
One of the things that they make you do is read and answer questions as they reduce the pressure in the chamber to simulate high altitude effects. As the pressure is decreased and your ears are popping you do not feel any different. The exercise is conducted in two rows – one row of pilots facing the other. We cannot see ourselves, but we can see the person in front of us and in fact, we are told to monitor the person in front to make sure he is ok, and to see what it looks like when a person approaches a hypoxic state. It was an interesting exercise to say the least. Btu the one that is most relevant to this topic is that every single pilot that was in the chamber – and all of them were in fine athletic condition – exhibited the inability to comprehend simple instructions and answer simple questions based on what they read on the paper in front of them
