The first thing that you need to do to prepare for speed reading is to pick out a practice book that you would like to work with. This is going to be the source that you will use to figure out how fast you can read in the beginning and to try out a few of the techniques that we discuss along the way before testing your reading speed again and again.
You can pick anything that you would like, but try to pick something that is a little bit easier to handle. You can build up to harder texts later on, but in the beginning, you will just want to work on simple things that do not have a lot of complicated words or other things that will prevent you from understanding what you are reading.
Once you have come up with your practice book, we need to figure out what your baseline reading speed is. This is going to be your baseline so that you can measure how well you are improving over time. This basically means that you will need to time yourself for a few minutes and then count how many words that you would like to use. We are going to work with the practice book right now, but you can also find some online programs that can do this for you if you would like to.
