Something's Broken by Nathan Jay

Two people with broken lives sacrifice themselves for love.

Something's broken

What would you be willing to do for real love? Although many people eventually find success, very few can say that they made it through without sacrificing pieces of themselves in the process. Alicia and Julian are no different. Although they come from drastically different lives, neither knows what it means to be truly loved. When these two people with turbulent lives finally meet, they must deal with the harsh reality of love’s most powerful lesson: accepting a person no matter their flaws and discovering to what length each of them is willing to go to protect that love.

Sample text:

As we drove through the parking lot, I continued to look back at the grocery store. Daddy did too. I could see his gigantic afro smashed against the roof of the car as he looked in the rearview mirror.

“Let that be a lesson to you, Chuckles. Stealing causes a lot of problems.”

“But Daddy…”

“Hush now. We’ll talk about it when we…"

Daddy was unable to finish his sentence. As we turned to exit the parking lot, two cop cars turned and headed towards the grocery store.

“Shit.”

“What is it, Daddy?”

Daddy’s voice changed. He began to stumble over his words.

“I’ll bet you’re mad at your old Dad, huh?”

“What?”

He kept looking in his rearview mirror.

“We just have to make it up to Tucker Lane,” he whispered. I looked out the rear window of the car. I didn’t see anyone behind us.

“Daddy, you’re not making any sense.”

He slapped at his chest until he found his pack of cigarettes. Afterward, he pushed in the lighter on the dashboard and waited for it to heat up.

“You okay, Chuckles?”

But I was scared, and I could tell something wasn’t right. Daddy pulled out the lighter and lit his cigarette. After taking a long deep puff, he looked in the rearview mirror one more time before blowing out a big cloud of smoke.
