If you want to meditate successfully, find a quiet and calm place. When you meditate in a place, with background noise from things such as the radio or the television, you will be distracted. In addition, ensure you choose an area that is not too warm or cool to meditate. When you are too hot or too cold, you cannot concentrate effectively.
Step two: Sit in a comfortable posture
For effective meditation, choose a comfortable position to sit in for around ten to fifteen minutes. You don’t need to follow a specific position if you find it hard to hold during the meditation session, as this will only serve as a distraction. The seating position should be comfortable but not too comfortable as you may find yourself involuntarily sleeping during the process (if you find yourself constantly falling asleep, it shows that you require more rest in general).
The key word here is “COMFORTABLE”. You need to remember that the sole purpose of meditation is to improve your focus and awareness and not shut it down. The general regular meditative posture is sitting with your legs crossed with the hands placed on your lap. However, if you find this position challenging, find a position wherein you will be comfortable as long as you are not slouching. You could be seated in a chair, bed, mat or floor so long as you maintain a straight back. (When meditating on the floor, use a cushion).
