Scuba Fundamental -“Start Diving the Right Way" is a unique concept. It is not just another run of the mill “how to dive” manual. It is primarily for people who do not yet dive but are thinking of learning. It takes them from the germ of the idea that they might like to try scuba diving up to the point where they have done around 20 dives.
This is a crucial phase in every diver’s diving life. This is the time when a person decides if they will be a diver forever or if diving will just become something they did once upon a time. Too many people stumble into diving without being properly prepared or doing enough research and, sadly, end up abandoning the sport, wasting both money and time and missing out on a lifetime of incredible experiences.
The aim of Scuba Fundamental is to make sure that doesn’t happen, by guiding new divers along the right path and helping them make all the right decisions and avoid the many pitfalls that lie in wait for the unwary.
Genre: SPORTS & RECREATION / Water SportsReleased in March 2016, Scuba Fundamental has featured continuously in the list of best selling scuba diving books on Amazon.com ever since. Its predecessor, Scuba Confidential was no. 8 on the list of best selling diving books worldwide in 2015.
In a good course, every practical session will be run as a proper dive. You will be assigned another person to dive with, normally one of your course-mates. This person is your “buddy.” You will get your equipment ready; check to make sure it is working properly and put it all on. You will then check that your buddy’s equipment is working too and that they have not forgotten anything in the gearing up process. They, in turn, will also be checking that you have not forgotten anything. Reassuring isn’t it?
You will enter the water, wait on the surface and then, after making sure your buddy is ready too, you will go underwater and just try swimming around. You will probably find that breathing is much easier than you thought it would be but that keeping your balance and maintaining a fixed position in the water is much harder than you expected. If you have seen video of trainee astronauts attempting for the first time to deal with weightlessness, you will have an idea of what awaits you. It will soon become much easier but, in the beginning, you will feel a little clumsy. Don’t worry: it is the same for everyone.
It would be foolish to pretend that nothing can go wrong on a scuba dive. Equipment can fail and divers can make mistakes, so your instructor will be teaching you a) what can go wrong, b) what you should do if it does go wrong and c) how you can help your dive buddy if they have a problem during a dive. The procedures and techniques the instructor shows you are called “skills” and, in a good course, you will practise these a lot so that they become easy. Then, at the end of the dive, you will exit the water, remove your equipment, dismantle it, clean it and put it away. Each full session will last a couple of hours.
