SH: Alright, thank you for having me here.
RL: My first set of questions is about your background, and experience in the field of public speaking. So that public speakers in our audience can understand who you are, how you developed the skills, and how you can relate to where they are right now.
We’ll jump right into the major skills all public speakers need with so they can set themselves up for success. Could you tell us a little about yourself regarding background, education, and experience in public speaking?
SH: My true career background was in graphic design and illustration, taking and majoring in art in college and minoring in psychology, one of the electives I took was public speaking.
Now, for me talking about, I’m ashamed to admit it, almost 40 years ago, I got all A’s in that course, and through that, I found that it actually helped my career. Just taking those classes in college helped me with things like stepping up in college and being able to be out front of the homecoming pageant, and helped to be on stage for different events.
I got involved in different business as I grew, and even as a graphic designer, presentation skills. Whether you’re presenting at an ad agency to clients or speaking to your own executors at a company, or presenting an idea to somebody, I found that those public speaking skills helped me along.
There was one company I was with in the nineties, and it was a software company, and about every other month our marketing department would present new software to a sales force of 200 people, and we would put on a big presentation, almost like an act. That, oddly enough, helped to encourage my public speaking skills.
