Have you ever been in an earthquake or hurricane? Have you witnessed the horror of a raging forest fire or a house burning down? Have you felt the panic when you realized you were lost in the wilderness? Have you experienced a medical emergency in an area where no help was available?
I’ve seen my share of disasters during my life. Some were unpredictable acts of nature; others were caused by ignorance or stupidity, or by not thinking through a situation.
I’ve lived life to the fullest and sometimes gotten myself into situations that, although they began innocently enough, became disasters in their own right. On other occasions, the wrath of nature caught me unprepared and without the supplies and tools needed to survive.
Let me begin this book with a few examples of some of the disasters and emergencies I have experienced. It was these events that motivated me to become trained in surviving disasters and handling emergencies. I decided that the next time disaster strikes I would be prepared.
On Christmas in 1986, my father decided we were going to take a hike. The day was beautiful, warm, but not comfortable. The snow was still on the ground from the storm of a week before. Our goal was to get back before lunch, so we left early, about 7 a.m., and anticipated returning home by noon.
Our front yard bordered on the south side of the San Bernardino Mountains. Just past Route 18, there was a steep drop of several thousand feet. A small canyon wound its way down the side of the mountain. It looked very scenic, and we thought we’d easily make the trek to the bottom and back in a few hours.
We began the hike with little more than a few granola bars, sturdy shoes, and the clothes on our backs. We slipped out of the house early, simply telling the rest of the family that we’d be hiking, without informing them exactly where we would be.
Talk about the perfect storm.
