Space and time are two correlated and interrelated elements of the universe. As children, the early developments of our knowledge and perception of space could be traced back to our favorite toys – Lego blocks, doll houses, and Tetris in our Game Boys.
We were taught to tell the time through toy clocks. By understanding and memorizing that sixty seconds make up a minute, sixty minutes make up an hour, twenty-four hours make up a day, and so on, at a tender age we begin to understand the essence of time and its paradoxically constant yet progressive state.
For most of us, space perception is a much easier concept than time. Matter and measurements that relate to size and shape after all, appeal to our visual impression, whereas time perception is a more complex structure because of its abstractness. This is probably why it is easier for us to correctly choose a shoe that would fit us just by looking, than to estimate how much time it would take us to walk from the shoe store to the parking lot.
The same thing goes when one is given multiple tasks. We find it easy to say how many words we should type up for a report, or how much ketchup we want on our burger, but we find it hard to correctly analyze how much time it would actually take to finish the article, or to cook the burger without letting it get burned.
It gets even harder when trying to estimate the time needed for a project that would require multiple steps, such as defrosting the burger patty, cooking it to medium rare, toasting the buns, slicing the cheese and finally, placing everything on the plate in a presentable manner. Oh, and also not forgetting the ketchup.
