Sometimes it seems that there is never enough time in the day to get everything done. That is why so many people continue to stay up late every night, despite needing to rise early in the morning. Some of us may take medications that cause excessive drowsiness and make it even more difficult to wake up. This makes alarm clocks an essential part of most people’s morning routines. The brand of the alarm clock is not as important as the placement of the clock itself. Make sure you place it far away from your bed. By placing the alarm clock far away from your bed, you will force yourself to physically get up and turn it off. There are also great alarm apps like Sleep Cycle available that will attempt to wake you at the end of your REM cycle, when you are most likely to wake up without feeling groggy.
2) Wake Up and Exercise
For some, the idea of exercising at all sounds like torture, let alone first thing in the morning. Of course, I would never suggest that you run a marathon at dawn (however, if you are an overachiever, it certainly would not hurt). However, performing a gentle exercise routine directly after rising from sleep will get your blood pumping and signal to your brain that the day has begun. The point here is not to burn calories or to replace your regular workout routine; it is just to shake off the initial grogginess most people feel after crawling out from under their warm covers. Doing a few jumping jacks or push-ups are simple ways to get your heart rate up without any complex movements. However, if you are looking for something a little less intense, pick up a short yoga stretch routine to reduce any soreness you may feel from sleeping. Regardless of the exercise, make sure you dedicate at least five minutes to performing it directly after waking up in the morning. It is almost as stimulating as a cup of coffee and it is good for you! The more awake you feel, the more productive you will be.
