A company that neglects the carrot and favors the stick will find increased productivity among workers, and eventual total loss of morale and lack of employee loyalty. In other words, beating others up and whipping them to get the job done is a great way to create a hostile environment.
The same can be said for self-management. Hitting yourself with a stick constantly will leave you emotionally exhausted and unable to perform. Rewarding yourself for jobs well done, on the other hand, can go a long way towards increasing productivity (and smashing procrastination).
One way to do this is to go to your white board again. Draw a line across the bottom, and to the left write the words: “Last week’s victories” and begin spelling them out. If you don’t have enough space on your board to accommodate this, buy a second white board and place it next to your first (it’s worth it).
The idea is to go into each week energized from the things you DID succeed at last week. You may have had some setbacks, but you can always reframe them as victories, as well. For instance, let’s say you are now managing a small business and your sales are down. Well, by virtue of the sales dropping, you were forced to innovate some new products and ideas, and you’ve begun implementing them. That is a VICTORY that came out of a “negative” situation.
