Very quickly, you may find that a whole mornings’ work becomes simply a series of small digestible goals that are comfortably worked through and give you the sense of the achievement of multiple tasks. While they help with visualizing and prioritizing your days’ activities, a much greater benefit you get from list making is the satisfaction and reward of the completion of tasks. By mixing a variety of tasks, you are able to be ticking off parts of your list and gaining that satisfaction of completing things without having to tackle a string of intimidating goals.
Being able to put a line through task-by-task as they are completed helps reinforce a sense of achievement, even if each task completed is on a relatively small scale of importance? This tapping into positive feelings helps to stimulate our productivity. The feeling of being stuck on a large task with no sense of achievement can stifle any possibility of even getting started so set yourself tasks that are manageable; lists that include overly complex tasks like ’start a business’ or ‘learn to drive’ are unrealistic for casual quick-fire note making. Daily or weekly lists should only include tasks that are realistic within that particular period.
Be careful not to become bogged down in preparing your commotion lists: over thinking and planning with lists is just another form of procrastination, the very things we are trying to get away from in the first place! List making should be a quick outpouring of your brains own natural compulsion to try to plan things out; you are merely catching the ideas as they appear.
