We’ve looked at the common causes of procrastination. In all but the first cause, there is a common denominator for why we are allowing our goals and plans to stagnate or drift away—there is not enough physical ACTION being undertaken. In order to create physical action there must be momentum. Let’s say your plan is to go back to school. For whatever reason, you know that taking a particular curriculum will send you in the direction you want to go, but you fear the process. The idea of taking action in this instance involves opening up Google, printing out information about different schools, printing out their admission forms, and walking to the post office to mail them.
In reality the overall amount of work that was spent doing those tasks is only a couple of hours, but it can take days, weeks, months or years to work up the courage to do a couple of hours of work.
But it’s often just those first steps that create the momentum to carry out the rest of the work. We begin doing just a little bit, but then that little bit is carried forward into a lot, and before we know it we’ve accomplished what we set out to do.
