I remember when I was in college and the syllabus came out on the very first day of class. That term paper was in bold and I knew it was due at that date and time. However, that date and time was months away, so I had time, right? I should have done while I had time and was able to give it proper attention. Instead, I wait until the week that it is due, spend all my waking hours in a library, and still feel like it didn’t turn out the way that I wanted it to. Looking back, I would have done it the other way, but we can’t go back.
Our daily lives often mirror this scenario on a smaller scale. We might not be procrastinating a huge project, but it could be something as simple as going to the grocery store to pick up an ingredient for dinner. At the last minute, you’re frustrated that you have to make an extra stop when all you want to do is go home. Whatever you’re procrastinating, it’s time to just do it! In this chapter, I’m going to give you some tips and hacks for avoiding the tendency to procrastinate.
Get it Done Right Away
If you keep telling yourself that you will do it later, then it just keeps getting pushed back. Be honest with yourself. Will you actually get it done the next time it shows itself in the lineup? For me, I would find other reasons to push it back. When a task comes up, get to it as soon as possible and get it out of the way. You will avoid the stress of having to get it finished at that last minute.
