While the common sense line of thought is that procrastination is the enemy of productivity, it actually goes deeper than that.
The real enemy to productivity is not procrastination. It is resistance.
When you have a task that needs to get done, you may often feel resistance to beginning it. Maybe it seems too big, too boring, or too much like mindless work.
We humans are designed at a primal level to avoid discomfort. Dreading something is a form of discomfort. Given our primal urges, logically, we seek to avoid the dread. How do we usually avoid the dread? We avoid engaging in what is causing us to feel that way. That is when procrastination comes in. We’ll check our email, voicemail, do a load of laundry, clean up the kitchen, or any number of activities that appear “justified” to avoid the dreaded task before us.
On the other end of the spectrum, we may simply seek out a pleasurable task with the, “I’ll do it tomorrow” mindset that is the epitome of procrastination. Either way, we’ve thought our way into justifying the avoidance of the task at hand.
