Have you ever noticed that if you are driving a car (or a bicycle) and something grabs your attention on the side of the road, if you focus on that thing that grabbed your attention, you tend to navigate toward it? You often end up having to swerve the vehicle in order to avoid going off the road. Whatever it was that distracted us and made us change our focus causes us to subconsciously change our direction toward that object. It’s usually not a conscious decision to go that way, it’s just the way our brains are wired.
If we keep our focus on the road, we are fine, but when we lose our focus, we are in danger of losing the road. The same holds true of our goals. When we keep our mind on our goals, we tends to gravitate toward those goals, but when we take our minds off of that goal, getting distracted by some peripheral issue, we may find we are no longer moving toward that goal. It may be that we get so distracted that we completely lose site of the goal and by the time we realize it, we have gone “off the road”.
When we have a goal, and we use our positive attitude to obtain that goal, we must remain focused on that goal, until such time as we have reached our destination (of getting what we want). This means we need to not allow things like other people, unexpected circumstances, tragic news stories, or other peripherals to allow us to change our focus and take our minds off of our goals.
