Patanjali yoga aphorisms is well recognized and authoritative work on yoga. This work is available in 4 chapters(padas or divisions). The first chapter comprises of 51 sutras or terse rules. All these rules come under category of "samadhi". This samadhi is considered as a state of attainment. It is a fixed and unchanging state that is not under control of time. hence it also an transition less state of jeeva[living being] to which laws of world do not touch. It is to be noted that many Indian yogis are found to live under conditions of breathlessness and devoid of food nourishment for prolonged periods of time in samadhi state. What comes as double surprise is that according to science it is either living/dead for normal human being whereas this samadhi is inexplicable state of being according to rules of science. The control of repetitive and recurring thought patterns and streamlined thinking of mind is to be achieved which is no mean task. The prevention/stop of nature of these recurring patterns is achieved by constant practice of self absorbtion. This is a state that is considered as union with lord. This is a singular state and there are various categories of samadhi depending on various objects of experience of awareness.constant practice with detachment(which is called vairagya) from external world and its various material influences is also a precondition for success. Thus, the first chapter describes about practice that leads to the singular state of samadhi.
