Alinta looked down the long line of carts filled with supplies that followed them and beyond them to the huge flock of sheep her husband owned. She didn’t yet understand the concept of ownership, so she always thought of everything as Mel’s property only. She watched the dingo-like dogs on both sides of the flock and the new men, who were helping to herd over ten thousand sheep. Clouds of dust were churned up by the tens of thousands of hooves, and it filtered over the land of the Outback. When they stopped, it also settled over the people, the horses, and the sheep themselves. Alinta looked to her husband riding beside her and smiled. Mel had suggested that she ride astride since it would be easier to maintain her balance than with the sidesaddle she had previously ridden. She was finding that gripping the sides of the horse was much easier than maintaining her balance on top of a sidesaddle. She was holding their small, one-month-old daughter in a clever wrap she had contrived, which would hold the infant and keep her safe as she rode. It also allowed her to breastfeed the little girl when she became hungry and freed her arms to hold the reins of the horse as she rode. She was learning to really like these strange beasts she hadn’t known in her life while growing up. She found them to be intelligent, mostly kind, and very helpful. She could still use her own legs to travel, but they seemed to go much farther and much faster when on the animals. Now, with their daughter Ainia to carry, she was appreciative of the animals’ strength.
