Little did the lawyer know that he didn't bring any good news for him. Two hundred and fifty million was big money but that wasn't what he wanted from the state for ruining his life in this world.

But he could act and make the lawyer feel what he expected him to give him from the news he had brought. He cast about for what to say to the man to throw him into darkness. Still, he couldn't respond. His impulses were deadlock.

Actually, Nicholas was feeling strange about the whole thing. As far as he could remember in his life, he never needed any help from anyone on the outside. If there was anything that should be done for him, it would be from inside him and not from anyone outside.

That was the way he was. That was the way imprisonment had conditioned him to be. When situation got to the point of demanding humility from him in order to accept help, he would become violent. But now, he needed his lawyer to help him and violence was not a working substitute for it. He had either to lay his head on the pillow of humility and let the legal professional win his wishes for him or let his rigid pride ruin them. That made him uneasy. The fact that there was nothing he could do about it now had altered the function of his system to the point that he couldn't tell the lawyer whether his news was a good one or a bad one.

He had never given account of himself to anyone before. How could he do it now? Nicholas tried to draw an image of himself telling about his whole life. That was what it meant to him. A significant part of his life had been spent in the prisons.

Finally, Nicholas made way for the man on the couch on which he was sitting.
