One of the most useful capabilities in NLP is that of visualization. However, it can also be the most debilitating. When we stress about something, we have a tendency to imagine how things could go wrong. For those of us with powerful imaginations, this fear is only amplified. Fortunately, this skill is a gift! If you can imagine bad circumstances, why not use that power to imagine good ones?
Next time you’re stressed, bring up a calming image. Of you and your friends, your significant other, in the woods, on a beach, going for a walk, sipping coffee or tea or watching T.V.—whatever. The only thing that matters is that you allow yourself to feel calm, confident, and in control. Use visualization to imagine a positive outcome. Or, if you consider yourself a ‘realist,’ visualize the likely scenario. Even if there is likely to be something uncomfortable forthcoming, don’t lose yourself over it. Instead, realize that it’s not that bad in the grand scheme of things. Put your worries in perspective; allow yourself to acknowledge that there are much bigger things to get worked up over.
