According to Bandler and Grinder, a person’s language and behavior is partially based on his or her subjective experiences. The subjective experiences are referred to as “individualistic experiences,” i.e. the experiences which vary from person to person, including the personal perceptions of a person. Subjectivity embraces the five traditional senses of a person, which are: seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, and tasting. When a person uses his or her senses on any object, then they start to give meaning to the object according to his or her own mentality. So the behaviors and the reactive patterns of a person are dependent upon the individual choice of a person. NLP is a technique that manipulates such sensual and perceptual patterns of a person and thus, NLP believes it can change the behavior of a person.
Learning is considered to be a permanent change in behavior through practice and experience. NLP, given by Bandler and Grinder, is based on the notion that “learning can program one’s mind and behavior.” So by putting the person under the process of learning NLP, one can program one’s behavior of language. The learning programming can be in the form of modeling. Like in NLP, the model is shown to the subject and is said to model, or imitate, the behavior of the subject. It is considered to be a really fruitful technique of NLP. Other techniques of learning which can also be used in NLP are reinforcement, punishment, and so on.
