NLP recognizes the role it plays and has come up with a few techniques that aims to improve communication skills. Get someone to work with you on this skill. Tell him/her that you will be matching his/her non-verbals first, and that you will intentionally mismatch them later. Notice that despite the other person knowing what you will do, the results will be still be the same.
In this exercise, you will be the “matcher”. Start a conversation about something that is interesting for both of you.
As the matcher, you subtly match or imitate your partner's non-verbal behavior. Match his/her gestures, eye movements, pattern of making eye contact, voice use and overall posture.
