NLP was set in motion in the early 1970's at the University of California, in Santa Cruz. Richard Bandler and his professor, John Grinder, strived to develop models of human behavior to better understand why some people were excellent at what they did, while others found the same tasks nearly impossible to do. John Grinder, who has a background in linguistics, and Richard Bandler, whose background is in mathematics and gestalt therapy, (an experiential form of psychotherapy that emphasizes personal responsibility, and focuses upon a person’s experience in the present moment) sought to develop models showing how these people got the results they did. They desired to identify and model the patterns that produced these results, and then teach these models to others.
As a result of published works which examined the verbal and behavioral techniques of three widely known therapists, Virginia Satir, Milton Erickson, and Fritz Perls, Grinder and Bandler standardized modeling techniques, under the name, “Neuro-Linguistic Programming” to define the relationship between the mind, verbal and non-verbal language, and the body.
