Introduction

Every time you get a job offer, an expert negotiator is working hard to pay you thousands of dollars less than they have to.

It starts off professionally.  You’re jumping through hoops to get the job, delivering well-practiced answers to questions you’ve researched, and convincing the interviewer that you can do a good job.  Doing your best, you present a polished, professional image to your (hopefully) future employer.  You’re wearing your formal clothes usually reserved for weddings and funerals.

A few parts of the process give you pause.  “Expected salary” in the application?  A question about your “salary expectations” or “current salary” during the interview itself?  Why was there no salary included in the advertised job description?  You get an offer from the nice human resources lady and she pressures you to sign quickly and end the painful process.  You’re tempted to do just that.

It may not feel like it, but you’re in a situation similar to buying a car from a dealership.  The person on the other side of the table is a highly skilled negotiator who is doing everything she can to maneuver you into a position wildly in favor of your new employer.  Behind your back, she makes jokes that the negotiation is like a professional sports team (her) roughing up a children’s team (you).

This book is about leveling the playing field and helping you navigate this process in the best possible way.  Most workers only have a handful of job negotiations over their careers, but HUGE amounts of money are at stake.  You want to get it right.

This book is my best attempt to help you do that.
