1.The first stage is called Idealization. This is tricky because at this stage, the narcissist is still on his best behavior: he would make you feel loved, he’d be as charming as can be, he’d make you feel that there is no reason for you to doubt him, or ever think about leaving him. Sometimes, you would even feel like your partner cares more for you than you do for him—now, this is a danger sign in itself because relationships don’t have to be a competition of who is more caring or loving.
Then, when the cracks finally begin to show (i.e., he starts texting or seeing someone else; he’s mad all the time; he wants to be away from you all the time, etc), he would still make you feel like it is your fault. How?
1.He cheated because you are a nagger, and he feels suffocated.
2.He wants to be away from you because you talk all the time.
3.He texts someone else because you are boring.
In short, he finds every way to blame you, even if it is not actually your fault at all, because he does not know how to stand for his actions. But, since you already “idolize” him and think of him as your knight in shining armor (or your manic pixie dream girl, if that’s the case), then you would just feel guilty all the time—and you would keep on saying sorry even if you did nothing wrong.
