This disorder comes in many degrees and forms. There's a healthy kind of narcissism, then there is the narcissistic personality disorder, and the malignant kind of narcissism. The last one is the really destructive kind, requiring no scientific diagnosis in order to be spotted. This is the kind that significantly affects the people around the narcissist, doing both short and long term damage.
The first two, healthy narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder, more or less are the same, except that the latter is pathological. That is, a person cannot control his or her narcissism because of how he or she is wired. We will focus primarily on this kind of narcissism in this guide.
The first kind, however, is more of a situational thing. Sometimes people feel like putting themselves first, for good reason, in jest, or otherwise. In these instances, people are aware that they will appear narcissistic to other people, but will sometimes allow that for some purpose. It is even used as an adaptive mechanism to allow a person to cope with certain situations, which at times is necessary.
