These are the questions that will be answered in Max Wachtel's book. Whether or not the mental illness known as Narcissistic Personality Disorder even exists (and there is some controversy about this notion), it is clear that narcissism is prevalent in today’s world, and it lies on a continuum from totally fine to mildly annoying to completely irritating to terrible romantic partner to potentially dangerous to absolutely insufferable to mass murderer.
The narcissist hates that others try to diagnose him. The narcissist hates going to doctors because he thinks they are all beneath him. Who are they to tell him what he does or doesn’t have, why he is a failure in his life, or why he should medicate himself so that he can tolerate others.
Narcissism is defined as a strong focus on the self, lack of empathy, a need for admiration and fantasies. This book is the resource for identifying the aspects and treatments of the personality disorder Narcissism. Also, this book utilizes a deep understanding of how narcissistic behavior affects the society and initial treatments.

Narcissists find it very difficult to countenance success or achievement in others. A brother got a promotion at work? Don’t celebrate yet as the narcissist will find some way to make the situation about him. You learned to drive? You may find the narcissist claiming that the insurance is too expensive to allow you access to the family car or the roads are too dangerous for you to drive on your own with the children (for your own safety and that of the children of course!). Fundamentally, narcissists want to control every aspect of life and they will destroy others if they need to in order to facilitate their own desires.
On the surface, narcissists can appear friendly and charming, seductive even. This behavior is part of their control strategy. Narcissists understand emotions and know how to manipulate them to their own ends. They reel people in to their circle before subtly starting to exercise control. If a victim tries to assert their own authority the narcissist will respond suddenly and sometimes violently, subduing their victim to their will. Others will use emotions to blackmail their victim into feeling guilty for challenging the status quo.
