The diagnostic criteria given in the fifth Diagnostic and Statistical Manual were already discussed briefly in the introduction. However, it was quite a lot of information and it merits a deeper discussion to better understand exactly how a narcissist behaves.

The characteristics that will be discussed relate to the narcissistic personality disorder. While some of them may overlap with the normal phase of narcissism that occurs in childhood; the disorder differs in many important ways from that developmental stage.

Let’s first go through each personality trait listed in the official criteria:

Identity

Excessive reference to others for self definition and self esteem regulation:

This means that the person relies on affirmation from others in order to feel confident in him or herself. Behaviors like seeking the approval or admiration of others is counted under this criteria. A narcissist needs others to constantly validate his or her sense of self-importance. He or she may become very angry or depressed if that need for validation is not met. While everybody seeks a certain amount of validation from others in order to reaffirm their own sense of self; narcissists require an excessive amount. In some cases, they will need a near constant source of validation in order to maintain their strong ego.
