Along with the tendency to eagerly exaggerate their skills and accomplishments, people who have narcissistic personality disorder consider themselves to be the highest on the social totem pole. They tend to be very impatient when people talk about themselves, and interrupt conversations often. This leads those with NPD to unknowingly hurt others with their devaluing words to other people within the conversation as well. When they do realize that they maimed someone else’s feelings, they act in contempt, viewing others as weak. But when their ego is hurt by any type of criticism, they tend to act disproportionate to the circumstances at hand. Even during times of insecurity, their self-image still remains intact.
While others exhibit the above types of symptoms, there are also people who show more pathological narcissistic traits. This can mean they are controlling, do not tolerate the views of others, unaware of the needs of those around them, point blame constantly and are persistent in trying to convince people in seeing them how they want to be seen.
There is no actual one cause for the birth of NPD in people. It is usually a concoction of environmental, social, genetic and neurological factors that play together in their separate roles to create this unpredictable show.
