Those that suffer from NPD search out positions where they can feel as though they have power, and they display signs of self-professed superiority and arrogance. When the symptoms of NPD are first recognized, it might seem like the narcissist if just very confidence and has a high sense of self-esteem. The difference here is the fact that the narcissist takes these otherwise harmless personality traits to a pathological level. Their sense of self-worth is so high that they really, truly see themselves as better than everyone else. As strong as that quality might make them appear to be, they are also extremely sensitive and fragile, their self-esteem hinges on what other people think of them, if they have no audience they feel worthless, and they can’t take any kind of criticism. When they feel as though their sense of self-worth is threatened, they compensate for the feeling of deep hurt within themselves be disparaging or debasing whoever they think is to blame for it. If they can’t logically lay the blame anywhere, they attack wildly. They try to lift their own self-esteem by lowering others. Because of their needs to feel better and higher at all times, the things that they say can be egregiously hurtful and harmful, even jumping well over the line of verbal abuse.
