Chapter 1... Exit Fuyang Enter Huainan

One thing for certain about a foreigner living and working in China is there are always stories to be told as they seem to develop all around you constantly. The hardest thing is trying to remember them so they can be told later. As I write this book for you readers I will do my best to recall all those memories, and hopefully you will be able to envision these stories through my words.............. Kenneth D. Bostian

As the school year was drawing to a close in Fuyang I had found my next position in the city of Huainan also in Anhui province, and only about an hour or so away from Fuyang. Huainan is nestled between the capitol city of Hefei to the south and Bengbu to the north.

Huainan is best known as a coal city, and coal cities are often seen as a little more progressive and richer than other cities of the same size. By Chinese standards it is not a big city, but any place with a million and a half people is pretty huge to me !

By the time the Fuyang term had drawn to a close I had lost my voice almost entirely. My voice was mostly a hoarse whisper and the students could laugh with me over my voice, telling me that I talk too much ! I never dreamed that I could strain myself so bad, but I had a lot of classes and at least three English corners each week causing my condition.

During the last few days in Fuyang I spent most of my time getting the little things done, Mary was with me during that time and we bought our train tickets and I withdrew all my money from the bank which would soon find a new home once we arrived in Huainan.

That last day in Fuyang found my students coming and going to say goodbye, while my closest students stayed with me until the very last minutes before we had to leave.
