You did not mean to, but the truth is that you have indeed accumulated quite a great deal of items over the years. My friend got married and moved to a new apartment, and soon she invited me over for lunch one day. As soon as I entered her home, I was taken aback by the simple beauty of her home. She had very little absolutely necessary stuff in her place. She had everything that she needed but nothing extravagant or out of place. However, last year when I went back to her apartment, the place was overflowing with stuff she had managed to accumulate in less than a year. That is when I decided that I needed to take stock of my belongings and decide which needed to stay and which needed to go.
Since I already saw the effects of over-accumulation, I knew where I was heading to. But, if you are someone who needs a little guidance, then this starter guide should help you:
Make a short list. Identify what’s most important to you. This list should not contain more than 7 points. Don’t judge the importance of things based on their market value or its cost.
Remember, engaging in extravagant and over-the-top acts of de-cluttering like emptying an entire closet under the pretext of cleaning is not going to help you. Without a list of what you need, this whole exercise is going to be counterproductive.
First step in de-cluttering (especially if you are new to this) is throwing away all your unwanted and broken items. You need not feel broken hearted or guilty about this.
