To many, minimalism as a concept is about giving up the conveniences of the modern world. It’s about giving up a beautiful home you love, an expensive phone you use every day, a car you drive every day and that adds meaning to your life and instead, selling your car, giving up all the little pleasures of life, moving into a log cabin somewhere in the woods, and living off mother nature. What a misconception!
True, some people find great pleasure in giving up all their earthly possessions and living off the earth; to these people, living off the earth, what we call a most basic life, is the ultimate definition of simplicity. However, while that does indeed amount to minimalism, in reality, however, such a view is an extreme version of minimalism and in fact, to adopt minimalism and make it part of your life, you neither have to move into a log cabin located somewhere off the beaten path or give up buying yourself an expensive cup of coffee.
Decluttering, i.e. removing excesses from your life, is one of the major aspects of minimalism and living a minimal life; in fact, decluttering is one of the first key steps to a minimal life. Decluttering has many benefits.
Consider this, when your closet, office desk, or even lounge area is brimming with junk, finding things you need in an instance will prove chaotic; when you can’t find what you need when you need it, you’ll end up wasting time and will not get much done.
On the other hand, if you take a second to declutter your desk, closet, bedroom, or even lounge, you’ll find what you need faster and instead of spending time rummaging through a ton of stuff you don’t need (the very definition of junk), you can dedicate the freed up time to doing things that matter the most to you.
