Make sure that you wear loose clothing. Try to keep your neck and waist unrestrained and free. You may also choose to remove your shoes.
Put yourself in a lying position. You can do this on a mat or on your bed. Set your arms at your sides. Turn your hands facing up. Keep your legs slightly apart. You can try several positions and even use pillows. You should also consider the temperature. The important consideration is you make sure you are comfortable.
You should start by assessing how your body weighs as you are lying down. Feel the points where your body comes in contact with the surface you are lying on. As you breathe, feel yourself sink into the mat or bed.
Feel your breaths and take note of the sensation. You can choose to focus on the breath passing through your chest, belly, throat or nostrils. Choose whichever is predominant or comfortable. Stay in this state for a while.
When you are comfortable with your breathing, start by shifting your awareness down to your left leg. Move you’re your knee, your ankle, until you reach the tip of your big toe. Feel the sensations as you go down with curiosity. Notice how your toes come in contact with your socks or the air. Shift your awareness to each of your toes. Note the sensation or lack of sensation of each.
