Millennial Depression and Addiction
The experts say that Millennial depression and addiction are increasingly worse off than other generations. The “Baby Boomers” or the parents of Millennials are faced with a dilemma. The fact is that the Baby Boomer generation were born in 1946-1964. During this time, the parents of Millennial’s were affected by the world around them.
World War 2 ended; millions of Americans came home. These returning men from war lead to a spike in marriages and babies. Imagine coming home after War and facing death day after day. Once these men returned, they were excited to be alive and move on with what was important in their lives, love, marriage, kids, and a thankfulness to be alive.
The Baby Boomers were a generation surrounded by fear and anxiety. These parents to Millennials would have been very overprotective. These are your “helicoptering” parents that are always over your shoulder and observing. They tend to be of a smothering nature, which does not allow you to learn for yourself as a child in adolescents.
A child or teenager cannot learn the skills necessary to succeed in life with a parent constantly hovering overtop of you. You cannot fail and mess up, when you have that parental figure correcting your course. The Baby Boomers are driven from a deeply rooted anxiety and fear from War, famine, and an uncertain time in their lives where their futures were undeterminable.
One cannot blame the Baby Boomers for being anxiety riddled; however, an entre generation will suffer because of it. Millennials will feel the anxiety that there parents carry vicariously passed down. Millennials will be conditioned to not think on their own two feet completely.
