Previously discussed, this is perhaps the most simple and universal meditation technique of all. Breathing meditation is easy to follow which is why it is a great technique to start with when you are still a beginner in meditation.
After you have set a comfortable sitting position and a balanced posture, you can start to drift away and clear your mind by focusing on your breathing. Focus on the sensation as the air enters your nostrils and follow it down to your throat; do the same when you exhale. Be aware of the rising and falling of your abdomen every time you take air in and out. If ever you find it difficult to focus on your breathing then you can count after every breath to avoid the distractions. It is also important that you do not consciously change your breathing pattern. Do not attempt to make your breathing too shallow or too deep; just make it as normal as possible. Also, do not pass any judgment with the way you breathe, like the rhythm of your breathing or comparing the last breath from the other, as this will not do you any good.
Another effective method that will help you in breathing meditation is imagining a spot above your navel and focusing on that spot while you breathe in and breathe out. This will help you clear your mind and aid you to stay away from thoughts that might creep in while you are trying to focus.
Some mental images can also help you to concentrate which includes picturing a coin above your navel that rises and falls every time you inhale and exhale, or imagining a floater in the sea, bobbing up and down with every air you take in and out of your system.
