While it is perfectly true that you don't need anything at all in the way of equipment for meditation, because of our western beliefs, it isn't a bad idea to create a space for your meditation practice. The reason I say this is because it helps you to become committed to the act of meditation. You can use inspirational bits and pieces in this area and define it as being the ideal place for your daily meditation to take place. If you like, it also gives you that sense of commitment that you will need if you are to make meditation part and parcel of your everyday life.
You may be fit enough to sit on a yoga mat and in this case, will need to get yourself a very firm cushion for meditation or even a meditation stool. This helps to support your body and encourages the spine to be straight which is important to your meditation practice. You have energy points the full length of the spine and if you slouch, these are blocked which will make the meditation a little stifled.
