I hinted in the last chapter about the eightfold path. No one is expecting you to don orange robes and become a priest, but I think that if you know the philosophy of Buddhism it gives you a better understanding of what meditation is all about. The things that happen in the course of your life affect your state of mind. This was something that the Buddha discovered during his investigation into suffering. He made the following assumptions based upon what he learned. These are called the Four Noble Truths.
• Human beings suffer
• There is always a reason why people suffer
• All suffering ends
• There is a path that leads to the end of suffering
Okay, so that’s pretty obvious and no one can debate it, but what he discovered that was more interesting were the reasons that people suffer and what they can do to make that suffering less. These were called the Eightfold Path.
Right Understanding
This means that if you understand things in the right way, they can cause you no suffering. Yes, of course, you must face difficulties in your life and they are inevitable, but much unhappiness comes from misunderstanding. If you, therefore, begin with the ability to see further than your own viewpoint, you are able to meditate in a more effective way. When you meditate, you take away the element of judgment. This is what happens when a thought comes into your mind. Thus, with this taken away, your mind is in a more receptive state to be able to meditate.
